Get Your Students Reading Great Literature

The Center for the Humanities at the UW-Madison invites high school teachers to apply for funding to participate in a year-long collaborative program, “Things Fall Apart in Wisconsin.” This program celebrates Chinua Achebe’s great text and promotes student as well as teacher collaboration between high school and post-secondary institutions across Wisconsin. Based on the highly successful 2005-09 programs “Don Quixote in Wisconsin,” “Dante’s Inferno in Wisconsin,” “One Hundred Years of Solitude in Wisconsin,” and “The Brothers Karamazov in Wisconsin,” this program is described briefly below.

Things Fall Apart in Wisconsin: The Center for the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites interested schools and teachers from across Wisconsin to join us in our year-long partnership program, Things Fall Apart in Wisconsin. Teachers and teams will be selected to participate in the fifth of our series of successful state-wide projects. The project aims to bring Achebe’s classic novel into high school classrooms throughout Wisconsin. Each team will receive a financial award, teaching support and materials, access to university resources, and opportunities to participate in two teacher colloquia, and a student conference. Things Fall Apart in Wisconsin is sponsored by the Center for the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with the support of the African Studies Program, the Department of African Languages and Literature, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, the Wisconsin Humanities Council, Vintage/Anchor Publishing, the Anonymous Fund, and the Evjue Foundation.

REQUIREMENTS OF PARTICIPATION

  • Attendance and participation in the two (2) Teacher Colloquia and Student Conference. One representative of each school must attend each event and students must present their work at the conference.
  • Submission of a letter of consent and support from your principal, acknowledging participation in our events.
  • Refund the $1,000 Team Award if you decide after October 1st not to participate fully in the project.
