Cartonera publishers: Recycling Latin American Bookscapes / Libros cartoneros: Reciclando el paisaje editorial en America Latina will take place on October 8th and 9th, 2009 at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. The conference occurs in conjunction with the Wisconsin Book Festival (October 7th through 11th) and involves the first reunion of editors from eight Cartonera publishing houses in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Mexico and Chile.
The purpose of the conference and workshop is to bring together the community of scholars and members of different Cartonera publishing projects. The conference will also serve to introduce the Cartonera community to fellow faculty members, graduate students, undergraduate students and the Madison community at large.

MEMF joins the 2009 International Year of Astronomy in a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture, including the 400th anniversary of the first astronomical observation made through a telescope by Galileo Galilei. Galileo's father, Vincenzo, a member of the Florentine Camerata, a musician and music theorist who combined the practice and theory of music with mathematical discussion of harmony, influenced Galileo's scientific experiments.
The Madison Early Music Festival, celebrating its tenth season, will explore the works of music and the arts that were inspired by scientific discovery that had a tremendous impact on culture and civilization.
